Respiratory muscle mechanics, activity and effort in chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD)

Thank you for your interest to participate in a research project being conducted by the Adelaide Institute for Sleep Health, Flinders University, and the Flinders Medical Centre. You have been invited to participate because you meet one of the inclusion criteria of our study below.

This research is being done to learn more about breathing control in respiratory disease. We want to know more about respiratory muscle function and how to best measure it.

Taking part in research is always voluntary.

Inclusion criteria: we are looking for people who want to take part in this research if:
• You are aged 18 years or older AND
• You are able-bodied and healthy with no current major pulmonary or neurological disease and no significant history of smoking or smoking in the last 2 years
-OR-
• You have a diagnosis of moderate-severe chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) with no coexisting neurological disorder or malignancy.

If you decide to take part in the research, we will ask you to perform a range of tests to assess respiratory muscle function and respiratory muscle activity during breathing. Standard lung function tests and questionnaires will also be performed. These tests will be performed over 1-3 visits lasting 1-2 hours each. This is an observational study which means that you will not be given any treatment or drug, but the usual function of your respiratory muscles will be measured.
